Glass is the clearest case. Straight from the SA EPA: only 11% of the glass South Australians put in kerbside recycling bins makes it back into a glass container. Most of it breaks in the truck — 85% is downgraded to low-value mixed glass, bound for road base and similar. Containers returned through the deposit scheme? 99% goes back into making new bottles, right here in SA.
But it isn't only glass. Everything in the yellow bin travels mixed together, and that broken glass contaminates the paper, cardboard and plastic riding along with it. Sorting is the whole difference: the EPA says containers separated by material type before they reach a depot are "of a much higher recycling grade", because sorting "means less contamination and a higher value for the product". Cans and plastic bottles in your Rabbit bin stay clean and separate — never tipped in with everything else.
